The Lilydale Squash & Fitness center was opened by Ian Harvey
in 1980. Ian had formerly owned and operated ‘Harvey Motors’
in Mitcham. It was when he sold this business and moved his family
from Vermont to Chirnside Park that he identified the need for a fitness
facility to cater for not only the local community, but also those
living out beyond the metropolitan zone.
The
initial facilities were opened in 1980 by 8 times world squash champion
Geoff Hunt and employed 10 staff including the Harvey family. The
facilities included 8 squash courts, a gymnasium, crèche,
function room and sauna / spa facilities.
While other fitness centers were forced into closure
during the mid 80’s Ian recognized the evolution that the
fitness industry was undertaking and modified his facilities accordingly.
As a result, the Lilydale Fitness Centre went from strength to strength
while others struggled.
Some of the new facilities included at the center
were firstly a swimming pool, and a little later, the circuit room
which replaced 2 of the squash courts.
In 1991 further expansions saw the introduction
of new aerobic facilities and a large upstairs mixed gymnasium.
The new gymnasium allowed the existing down stairs gymnasium to
be converted to a ladies only gym equipped to cater for the special
needs of female fitness.
1999 saw the introduction of our ‘state
of the art’ Cardio Room and the Precision Cycle room.
Over the last 10 years, the center has ensured
that it stayed abreast of the latest trends within the industry
by introducing newer classes and fitness techniques popular around
the world. These have included Tai Box, our most popular class,
Pilates, Yoga, Power Bar and other great classes catering for different
types of fitness and individual needs!
The center has a reputation of being quite
social and therefore fun to visit. Ian equates the sustained success
of the center to it’s ability to deliver facilities and classes
suitable for the needs of members of any age. It is truly a well
rounded ‘family facility’ probably stemming from the
full involvement of the Harvey family through it’s history
including Ian and his wife, his children, and even Ian’s father.
